This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Consider this a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but within Together lies a profound examination about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when the couple transition from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying horror experience, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
